I'm getting an Iphone4 but I want to know everything...

I want to know what is the cheapest plan that has the data plan and if they have a plan for two people. I also want to know everything I can before I go to apple like everything I need to buy with the phone because at the apple store here they know nothing about voiceover and accessibility. Also what things do I need to buy to make the phone easier for me? Anything else I forgot to ask just say them here.

The price to get the iPhone4 and a contract with ATT is either $200 or $300 depending on the iphone the 16 gb is $299 and the 32 gb model is $299. Now that you are just joining AT and T, there will be no unlimited data plan, but if you want 2 gb a month bandwidth, then I believe that price is $25. Unlimited used to be $30 but I was grandfathered in so I still have my unlimited. Unlimited texting is an additional $20 per month, $15 for 1500 texts or $10 I think for 1000 texts I could be wrong on this one. For 450 minutes, it is $40, 900 minutes is $49 or $59 I don't remember which, and unlimited minutes is $70. In total, I pay $130 a month that includes tax because I've got the unlimited data $30, + unlimited minutes $70 + unlimited texting $20 so $120 plus tax so $130. a bit steep, but I can afford it. Of course, you don't have to get what I got, but at least I don't have to worry about a fluctuating bill each month and it is predictable.

As far as accessories are concerned, a good case is hard to find, you don't want a partial case, meaning an Apple bumper or something that doesn't cover the screen or something that only covers the sides and the back. I bought an odderbox, which is kind of bulky, but not too much so. However, the protection is a tradeoff because it is extremely good at protecting the phone. the phone sits inside a plastic shell then you stick that plastic shell inside a rubberized skin which protects the phone., so the entire phone including buttons, screen and ports are covered byt he phone, and the odder comes with a belt clips. They come in white back blue or red that I've seen. Or, I would get a smaller case, one that looks like a wallet that is leather, that you can slide the phone into and there is a flap that flips over the screen and snaps shut. These are the only 2 styles of cases I should recommend. Other than that, there isn't anything that you absolutely should buy. The headset that comes with it has a microphone on it which is excellent sounding for phone calls when walking or for skype calls. You can find the users guide online and practice jestures. There is an area in the settings app to practice jestures under setting/general/accessibility/voiceover/practice voiceover jestures. This should be enough to get you started but be aware that the A T and T store may or may not have the odderbox or the phone cases I described. If they don't have these 2 styles I'd still ask to see the cases and be sure they fit the iPhone4, because cases that fit the 3g or 3gs will not work as well for the iphone4. Essentially you want something that protects the phone plus the screen. If I think of anything else I wil surely let you know. But this is all I use and I am perfectly content.

You can get the 600 minutes/month plan for, I think $39 (I am not a big phone talker so I have collected over 4000 roll over minutes on that plan), cheapest data plan (200 megabytes) is $15/month. Keep in mind the phone will look for wireless networks before it uses the plan, so I have ellected to go with this since I am usually at home or at a hotal or coffee shop with free wi-fi, so I use very little of the data plan capabilities. Also you can skip the data plan altogether by calling AT&T's disabilities center and they can waive it for you.
My phone has been very tempermental with phone calls, unless you use the head set, but the head set is very good so that's fine. I have heard IOS 4.2 has fixed some of these issues but I have not updated my phone yet.
I got a Bluetooth keyboard from Menotek. Usually they cost you around $70 but this one was on sale for $25 on Amazon, so you may just want to look around and snag one up when you see a good priced one.
Refer to last poster with cases and you should be good.
I only got the 16gb model, don't see the need for addl 16 gigabytes, since I prefer to play mp3s, movies and audio books on a separate player and reserve the iPhone batteries.

I'm trying to do this the cheapest way possible because for now most of the time I'm always at home. So if I don't get the data plan how do I use the phone to go online?

Post 6 by just-chillin (Zone BBS is my Life) on Friday, 03-Dec-2010 18:21:50

If you don't have a data plan then you can't et net unless you are on wifi

Post 7 by rat (star trek rules!) on Friday, 03-Dec-2010 18:40:17

i've said it before, getting an IPhone with out a data plan is useless. if you get the IPhone, i'd get data, even if it's the 200 meg one. you never know if you'll need it. as for the other suggestions i agree with them. i have an ITouch here with one of the leather cases, it's quite nice, and mine came with a free screen protector.

I got te smallest data plan I could since they are in fact required to run the phone. Actually what i'm having trouble with is adding new contacts since for some reason it doesn't tell me when I type in a letter and the Done button is always dimmed. Then again I've had the phone less than a day so I can hardly expect to master it so quickly. But at least I figured out how to call people who aren't in my contact list LOL.

Post 9 by ACCOUNT DELETED (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Saturday, 04-Dec-2010 0:55:16

If I don't get the data plan and use the Iphone on wifi couldn't I get the aps and use them that way?

Post 10 by rat (star trek rules!) on Saturday, 04-Dec-2010 1:19:05

tenichally, yes. practically, no. some apps monitor stuff and i'm not sure if it would allow you to disable it, and IPhone requires data to function propperly from my understanding.

Post 11 by ACCOUNT DELETED (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Saturday, 04-Dec-2010 2:01:54

okay so then why does AT&T disability wave the data plan?

Post 12 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 04-Dec-2010 9:50:38

They wave the fee, not the plan itself.

Post 13 by ACCOUNT DELETED (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Sunday, 05-Dec-2010 0:32:15

so are you saying that I can still have the data plan and not pay for it if I call AT&T disability? Please someone answer me as soon as possible because I just bought the Iphone 4 and I bought the data plan but if I can still have the data plan and not pay the fee then great!

Post 14 by starfly (99956) on Sunday, 05-Dec-2010 0:52:48

I am gona look dumb here, but why pray tell are you wanting to cripel the Iphone? Its like me taking the data plan from my HTC touch pro2, that ant gona work. It uses the data plan to up date its GPS program and other things. Lastly are you going to always bee at home? Something to ponder before you just strip the Iphone of its data plan.

Post 15 by ACCOUNT DELETED (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Sunday, 05-Dec-2010 0:59:02

I want the data plan because I'm not always home but I'm very confused because I heard that you can use wifi from anywhere that has it so wouldn't that mean that I wouldn't need the data plan? And also I'm confused because first someone said that you could get the data plan waved and now someone said that they can wave the fee and you can still have the data plan so wich one is it?

Post 16 by monkeypusher69 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 05-Dec-2010 7:47:51

its good to have atleast the 250mb data plan as u may not always be near an open wifi spot and need to access info on the go it really would be crippling the phone to take it away. I heard the disability center removes the data plan not just the cost but i could b wrong as i never looked into it as i enjoy haviing my 2GB data plan and wish i got grandfathered into a 5GB $30 plan

Post 17 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Monday, 06-Dec-2010 16:32:31

From what I understans, and it makes sence to me. the waver is ment for people that have the phone and don't want to use the data plan. it still stays on, cause most phones have to have it to work correctly. but if you start using it for more then just the phone working, then you ahve to pay for it! so if your using it for downloading and using apps, that's extra, so you'll have to pay. if your just having it to make calls. then they wave the fee! make sence?

Post 18 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 07-Dec-2010 0:01:23

Ah. Not that the one I have is particularly expensive (only fifteen dollars), so I probably won't wave the fee.

Post 19 by starfly (99956) on Tuesday, 07-Dec-2010 7:43:57

Also keep in mind the Iphone is known for its app store, the eas of getting email and its bueatiful browser.

the iphone is awesome smile. yay. for apple smile.

Yep. I figured out that ending calls works better with Voiceover if you use the earbuds. Yeah I'm sure a lot of others figured that out before me but since I'm not a big earbud fan I held off on that as long as I could. Although I'll grant that the earbuds Apple supplies are a lot more comfortable than others I've used.

OK with regard to bluetooth mic and headphone the Motorla S9 works great. It has fabulous sound quality works well with VoiceOver.

Downsides of the iPhone. (Don't get a contract with Orange)It's a shame that using iTumes seems the main way of loading music onto the iPhone although I do know of several other accessible pieces of soctware that can do this (without all the bloat of iTunes).

However VoiceOver work well and if you are in the UK and iPhone 4 16Gb will cost you around 30 on a 24 month contract. Which I believe is actually cheaper than in the US.

With regard to data plan or not mine came with a free dataplan upto 750mb and wifi BTopenzone use. Wifi is commonly available and is normally free if you are a patron in many coffee houses etc.

My round up of the iPhone is that it is accessible and functions well. It is also good that Apple decided to included accessibility as standard. Unlike Nokia, Samsung, Windows Mobile etc. Who have not truly considered this option and require additional software to support TTS.

This isn't exactly an iPhone question but similar:
I got an iPod Touch and am looking at ways to extend the battery / what kind of external battery pack to get.
Thoughts if you have done this?
Plus what cases do you find to be helpful?

Thanks

Post 25 by Azzabat (Account disabled) on Thursday, 30-Dec-2010 15:14:11

I have an iPod Touch with VoiceOver. With regard to extending battery life. I have several suggestions. Depending on if you are using what sight you have when using the iPod, you can use the screen curtain (tap the screen 3 times using 3 fingers). This conserves the battery considerably. Also in areas with no Wi-Fi tuen the feature off as the will save power too.

With regard to a case, I have mine in a flip fromted case to protect the screen. I find this convienient. I normally have mine hung around my neck but you can also shove the iPod in a pocket without having to worry about the screen.

Post 26 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Friday, 31-Dec-2010 17:10:47

Thank you for those suggestions. I try and remember to check Screen Curtain. I have no sight so it makes sense to turn that off. If not using Wi fi, I find it a good idea to turn that off completely in Settings.

Thanks again for the suggestions

Anybody know how to delete a contacton the IPhone. I haven't yet figured out that part.

Post 28 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 12-Jan-2011 18:34:55

Go to Contacts, select / double tap the contact to delete, then double tap edit.
Now I haven't memorized this screen yet so can't give you a location to do this by muscle memory so you're gonna have to flick. Flick right from top until you find 'Delete Switch Button Off' then double tap that. Now it should say 'Confirm ...' something there and don't tap around or flick, just double tap to delete.
To group contacts and make groups get Grouper $0.99 from the app store, and GroupMail $1.99 from , the App Store, groups are nice if you have to send mass emails to groups of people.
HTH,

Leo

How do you save the changes though. I've clicked that Delete button and then Confirm. But I'm still in the contact form. But the DOne button is listed as Dimmed after I do the deletion.

Post 30 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 13-Jan-2011 17:57:00

I'll have to looke at that. I take it you mean the Done button at the top right usually. Do you confirm your changes on delete? I've only deleted groups but maybe I'll have to make a dud contact to test this. I'm using iOS 4.2.whatever is the latest - updated mine December 23 or thereabouts.

Post 31 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 13-Jan-2011 18:42:39

My mistake.

You have to use a third-party app to delete contacts unless I'm mistaken. I use Grouper to group them and GroupMail to send staff reports and such. Therein lay my confusion and misinformation.

Alternatively you can sync to your PC with Outlook if you have it, or just the Mail program on the Mac, and delete from there. It won't sync with Windows Contacts, only Outlook on the Windows side. That's because Windows Contacts isn't a syncable application.

Post 32 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 13-Jan-2011 19:18:53

That seems a bit riddiculous. You ought to be able to delete individual contacts on the phone itself without having to use a third party ap.

Post 33 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 13-Jan-2011 23:23:15

I could be wrong, I needed the third-party app for other reasons mentioned earlier anyway. But try a Google on how do I delete contacts from iPhone and see what you get. Google it from your iPhone, the search field in Safari. That interface is quite nice and you can easily use the popups when it's suggesting things.

Post 34 by monkeypusher69 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 13-Feb-2011 18:31:38

ok first off u can delete a contact from the phone itself. The steps give a above are accurate just double tap on the done button after comfirming the deletion. Also U can sync from windows contacts on vista/windows 7 it shows up as an option for syncing contacts in iTunes and is what i use as i Don't use outlook at all and much prefer web based email.
